Well I got my barrels all ready this weekend, started to pop popcorn I think I will try it on the turkey fryer next weekend. Was doing it on the stove in a large pot but I think the turkey fryer will be able to do a lot more then I was on the stove. Will be going first thing Saturday to set up the barrels and hang some stink bait and set up the cameras. Not sure if it's too early or not but would love to get a head start on make sure there are bears coming in. I know there are some in the area but this being a new bait site and new location I will start early to make sure I have visitors come the season. Probably go through a lot of bait starting this early but hopefully starting early I will get a better idea of what's around and where they are coming from.

Way too early (IMO) mack11 ! What's there in June may be long gone come August. With breeding season boars will travel considerable distances in search of mates, so what may be in your area one week may long gone the next. Great time to be out scouting for areas though. Check out the areas you're interested in; look for overturned rocks and scat on some of the old roads seek out some old abandoned orchards for claw marks and broken branches . Even start asking the locals if they are aware of any bears in the area, or better yet check with DNR, they may be able to steer you to some landowners who have nuisance bears. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to have someone take a bear out of their area.
If you do start to bait be sure and put out a couple Stink buckets. Take some old freezer meats & put it in a 20l pail, seal the lid and let it set out in the sun for a couple weeks. Take it to your bait site, crack the lid poke a few drip holes in the bottom and hang it high out of the bears reach and let the wind do the work for ya . You could just do that and set a tcam out to see what comes around.

Thanks for the input. How long before the season do you start to bait a new site? I will go scouting but will wait for the baiting until a later date. Thanks again appreciate the info.
Trevor.

If it's a new sight I'll start the 1st of August. Last year I started Mid July but I think that was way too early on my established sites we've been hunting for about 4 seasons. My bait was hit in less than 24 hours.
You may just want to put one barrel at several test sites to see what action you get, if you get good results at one site concentrate your efforts there. We had two sites on the same gated road about a mile and a half away and we were getting some of the same bears at both sites.I'll probably start the first week or two of August this year. Some guys like Skeeter will have several baits and maintain them all to increase their chances should a hunted site go cold.
Don't be surprised if your site goes cold once the berries ripen, sometimes there's nothing you can do but wait until the berries are gone, but once they are, the bears will be back looking for more food to bulk up for winter. Things really slow down for me come mid October ... not sure why. Whether it's because deer hunters are putting out their bait for deer season , or cranberries are at their peak , acorns are dropping I just don't know.
This is just the method I use and have had success with it. It ain't rocket science altho a lot of us are guilty of overthinking things sometimes. ! ...ha ha ha !

Trevor. u can bait a week before a month before or 3 months before.....if u just want a bear....any bear....a couple weeks is fine....but I've always found the longer and more I bait...the better and more bears I see. Obviously, there is a limit where it becomes too much on resources such as bait, vehicles, and the wallet.....imo every single time a big bruin comes into a site without incident.....the safer he feels. In a new area...i would bait at least a month before....if that doesnt work for you...don't fret....it can be done in less time....but its just like time in the tree....the more time u hunt...the luckier you will be. I'm baiting a brand new area this year...going in cold....but bears are everywhere in NS.....so just to get the jitters out of the way....I'm putting out a few test bait in a couple weeks. I'm sure we'll get bears....its hard not to in NS....but I'll still feel better when I get those first tc pics. Like tuk mentioned....some people say berries may pull them away.....but thats something I have never experienced....but different areas may be different. As an example....look at dumps.....those bears never leave....in fact ya couldnt even scare them away....and I believe its simply the food factor.....otherwise they wouldnt be there and put up with people and machines etc.....I just returned from a bear hunt in NB....the outfits that were baiting heavy were into bears big time....the guys who were not....were hit or miss......only because u asked the question....I would say bait as early and as often as u can......whatever that may be.....

Gotta hand it to ya Mack11 ... You're hard at 'er ! Getting out early definitely not a bad idea when you're setting up a new site. Looks like it's paying off for ya !
Any recent pics from the bait site ? What ya got comin' in ?

Posted a couple in the Picture section on the site was out the other day to check cams but one of my sd cards bit the dust so had to leave the one in the camera until I run to New Glasgow and get a new one. A lot of bait was gone and I have been getting a couple small bears in a fair amount just waiting and hoping for a big one to show up.
