I've never gone so far as to do ratios of my bait. Yes I did use a lot of bread, mainly as filler. Each barrel was getting 2 feed bags of bread nicely dusted with several flavours of jello crystals + a generous pouring of pancake syrup or table molasses. To that were added 2 bags of Tim's variety bagel/ sweets/ buns mixture. Everything was intermixed. And Yeh Losthunter ... I saw ya shaking your head is disbelief ! LOL !
As far as the mold went that was my BOC (Barley,Oats,Corn) with dried molasses. With the other bait available they seemed to show little interest.
I saved the pics you posted previously on the Bait Dryer Setup. Like the idea but here in the country I'm afraid I may end up with a wasp or rat problem. I still haven't managed to get rid of Rizzo but he lost 30 members of his extended family last year. Storage is also an issue as I can only have a medium freezer to stockpile.
It really shouldn't be this complicated. I understand your plight regarding the 100's of Km travelled just to bait. Where I'm only maybe 20 minutes away, and like losthunter says , just bait when you can. Yes it would be great to take a big bear for bragging rights but I'm looking for a good meat bear in the 200-225 lb range.
So my plan now is to try an anchored barrel and a tethered shaker, lessen my hole size, and start baiting 2 weeks before season opener on Sept 11th. Bait will consist of Apples and Timmy treats.

I do not add any large quantities of goo 2to my baits no grease ever no molasses ever these never added value to my baits. .... if i was using dry dog food i might add a 1/2 liter of chocolate sauce or maple syrup or pancake syrup but just enough to get the odd kernel tasty My current sun dried donuts fulfill my current needs. ... light to carry sugar Chocolat morsels and they last forever never getting moldy. .. heck if I have a bait that isn't hit I'll be bringing that bait back home with me. .. It works that well

Lots of action there for sure. Any idea of how many different bears? Anything to get excited about?

Lots of action there for sure. Any idea of how many different bears? Anything to get excited about? not too excited....but there is a shooter....I'd say 300 lber. we call this the Soggy Soul bait haha....its a tiny little clearing in a swamp basically. So, the cam is closer to the barrel than I like....so it makes the bears appear a bit bigger than they are. I might not even hunt it this fall....Ive got a couple folks who may tho......I just enjoy baiting them. And in a new area ... so I'm just putting out some feelers......so far so good

Sometimes 200 or 300 yds can make a difference but it appears as though you hit the nail on the head this time. Bear sizing with trail cameras can be risky business which is why I use videos almost exclusively. Anyway all BS aside it will be interesting to see how this site develops

I've got my eye on another spot.....but its a rugged trip in....pretty close to my house tho, so it wouldnt be a pricey site.

ran the baits yesterday....both getting hit, the old me wants to set out another one ..... my old back tho tells me no.....but no doubt in my mind...the best way to a big bruin is to bait until you find him. This year however, I dunno if I'll even kill a bear...so I'm just having fun with the bait and pics.....In 4 days I had 2400 pics....not an hour of the day a bruin isn't on the bait. I run them off every time I go in. and they are back 20 minutes after I leave. Here's a random pic out of the 2400. One big guy but he's been dark-time so far.

Here's something new I tried a few years ago for an elevated barrel to keep the smaller critters and younger bears from stealing the bait.
Wrapping the chain tight around original anchor chains, between tree and barrel helps to keep the barrel from being twisted on the tree. Be sure when you mount the barrel to the tree there is room between barrel top and tree for the lid ring to fit on.

Tuk, loved going thru these old pics. Esp the one in 2017 where it appears like a bear is trying to carry a barrel away w/him. Our liberal state voted out using using bait or hounds many years ago. So much for progress in game management. Does that 3legged bear ever come around anymore?
One year I forgot & left my icechest outside the cabin the 1st night of deer camp (see Hank’s bear in writer’s Corner). Sure wish I had chained it down. That rascal was pretty good sized. If anyone wants to really read some well-written, funny hunting stories, go to Writer’s Corner & read anyone written by Roe.
Roe (AKA Barenjager) seldom writes on my other forum Levergun Scoundrels either. Our loss. Great storyteller & photographer.

Ahhh ! That was the Shaker Barrel Bear. Ya gets some great pictures on the Tcams when you're not there. Makes me wonder what else is going on outside of the camera's eye !
Tripod ? He came back three years in a row. Always happy to see him on the trailcam. I think it was 2017, the year I didn't actually hunt, that Tripod never came back. Haven't seen him since !
Yes Roe was a great story teller. It's a shame we can't entice more bear hunters to sign on and share their stories and experiences.
