My good friend Steve has been out with a shoulder injury since before last Falls Bear Season . Waaaayyyy too much time to think and tinker, but he actually came up with a really good idea for a homemade Scent Dispenser. With a couple cans, some wire, tea lights and some great smelling tarts from Wally World he came up with this creation.
Let me tell ya , you'd be surprised at how well this works. He gave me a demonstration when I was over for a visit. The little access hole for the tea light lets in enough air for a good burn, but not enough to easily blow it out. Tea light will last ya about 3 hours.

What is the outside can?

Nothing more than a confectionary , cookie or tobacco style can with a removeable lid. I'm mulling over the idea with a can, within a can . Inside can is screwed to outside can from bottom . Holes cut the same as Steve's for candle, but the top of inner can has lid removed. on top of that I would lay in a sink strainer with small can for the tart to melt in. You could put the lid on the outer can with holes drilled to allow the scent to drift on the wind, like Steve's does.
The lip on the strainer will fit over the top of the inside can, suspending it, and eliminate the need to crimp the tart can. When I get it all together I'll post a picture .

Veeery interesting. Only problem would be if I hauled the backup supply of tarts up the treestand w/me. I’m already on the next size pants & its not bear season!

Sideswipe its not necessary to carry a pocket full of tarts. The tealights will last 3-4 hours so even if you drop a couple tarts in at once that will give you a lot of scent time if you're stand or ground hunting in one spot.
Tah Dah ... the 2 tier Tiffin .... the Tiffen Two ...as we call it !
To get proper air flow for the tealight to burn, 8 - 1/4' holes were drilled on the of bottom of the first tier along with a dozen 1/8' holes in the sides. A tart is placed in the second tier where the heat from the tealight melts it, and with some holes drilled in the lid the smoke and scent is dispersed. Voila ... and $25 scent dispenser. I've ordered the 3 tier just to experiment with another prototype, thinking the 3rd tier would be a smoke box where the smoke would accumulate and with fewer holes in top might give a more concentrated exhaust of scent ....totally in theory you understand ! These are prototypes.
Notice the whiff of smoke drifting across from the top right of tiffin.
Gotta give a big shout out to my Buddy - Steve for his relentless pursuit !

sideswipe, no worry about eating these “tarts”. They are just scented wax, but boy do they ever give off a potent scent. A very light breeze will have the bears’ noses twitching a long way from your bait site!!!

The smaller “regular” sized tea lights will burn for 3-4 hours. For longer sits, there is a larger size that will easily burn for 6 hours.

So there are several things to consider if you choose to use a scent burners.
... 1 ... For some they may not want to, or have a good place to, hang a stink bucket where the bears won't get at it, and if you've ever been down wind of one you'll ask yourself ..."What the hell was I thinking ?"
... 2 ... If you have a stick bucket but don't think it's working for you - this is another tool to try. At this point you have nothing to lose. If you are doing it regularly when you come in to hunt it's always a fresh scent, not only to attract bears but also mask your own scent.
... 3 ... If you have a target bear that hangs up just before dark, waiting for you to leave, this new scent may be enough to peak his curiosity and give you the daylight you need for a shot.
... 4 ... As it relates to #3 ... there is always the chance that a new scent may deter a bear because it is new and unfamiliar to them. It's a chance you are taking if you have a big target bear you're hoping to entice. For myself I'm willing to take the chance and hope the bears curiosity, and weakness to follow his nose will cloud his sensibilities.
Big bears are big for a reason, they are not easily fooled, and some are near impossible to deceive. If you're hunting for the joy of the bounty that a younger bear provides than this may be an easy way to lure one in. A bear will instinctively follow his nose.

This looks like a whole lot easier way to do a honey burn. Problem I’ve had in the past using Sterno, it gets too hot and burns the honey. Then you’re left with a mess to clean up.

ib61 ... It's certainly a lot less to carry into the woods. I bought two Tiffins so I could actually change them out at random to clean. Nontypical had made up the original prototype and gave me a demonstration on one of my visits . I was quite impressed with just how well it worked putting scent out and how quickly it started to simmer. The secret is getting enough air to candle to burn but not too much that the heat dissipates or the flame gets blown out. I think Nontypical pretty much has done the hard work for us!
