Wondering if barley would work as a good bait. Can get it really cheap but haven't tried it and haven't really been able to find any info on anyone using it?

I've used BOC (Barley,Oats and Corn with molasses) from the feed store but had little success with it, others swear by it. I've actually had it go moldy in the barrel when it was mixed with fryer oil. I have had some success with whole corn. I've been hunting the same area for several years now and wonder if "My Bears" have been accustomed to certain baits and just find the grain not as desireable.
I'm not sure I'd want to use just grains to bait. I know that too much grain given to livestock can cause serious issues like Twisted Gut so I'd question it's effect on bears.
They very well may take to it so give it a try. Most feeds at the feed store run in the $12 range so it's no big loss if it doesn't work. Don't be afraid to experiment with new bait ideas. Try it and let us know how it works for you.

Picking up some barley and oats today. Couple hundred pounds of each. Have some molasses left from last year going to mix them up. And maybe add some dog food in with it. Just gonna do some small test batches if it doesn't work then no big deal.

I know this is an older post but to answer the question about using grains as bait , I have used beef fattener and horse feed both with good results and one year I tried a bucket of corn silage which they went nuts over but that was in November and I used it at my snare set. 2 bears in 2 nights . I have no experience with spring bears but in the fall they are trying to fatten up so they crave carbs which build up the fat reserves , throw in some sweets and bingo you have bears . Meat is for building muscle and carbs build fat which the bears need to make it through the winter.
