if you were legally permitted, would you shoot an adult sow that didn't have cubs? Out of the 30 odd bears I've arrowed exactly two were sows. Both were barren and very old....sometimes at night tho when I lay my head down I wonder if I should have passed. Neither one were good eating. The first old one at 22 years old, even the slow cooker wouldn't make the meat chewable. I dunno if its a sow thing or just at around 20 years old they become tough. I killed a 17 year old boar once and it ate just fine.

I've been after Sideswipe for years to come back to Nova Scotia for a Hunt...he has a standing invitation. As a matter of fact I had him up to Spondo where you had that brute coming in.
Remember When?
Friend Sideswipe sampling some Nova Scotia blueberries from atop Mount Kill-A-Man You-know ! Yeh ...uphill both ways ...and steep !

That bear left you with some great stories! Back on topic ...Charlie's 235 lb sow from 2013 aged out at between 18-19 years of age. Charlie graciously donated the meat to me and it was every bit as good as a 200 lber. If I'm not mistaken Lost Hunter you had named her after one of your high school teachers ... man she was a surly ole thing! Charlie's Bear 2013 tuk d 1

Sorry if this takes this off topic in a different direction but what is the best way to determine sow/boar. Is there certain traits to look for, way they act etc?

Sorry if this takes this off topic in a different direction but what is the best way to determine sow/boar. Is there certain traits to look for, way they act etc? sure....think like big male lab vs female lab as a starter....that just rough....but the males are bigger and blockier. And its a start. And the obvious is cubs of course....and if you have cams over your bait....you will likely get to know each individual bear you have coming...if hunting over a bait. The last and only two sows Ive shot....I knew they were sows just from trail cam pic...or I was pretty sure anyways. A while back I was asked to put together a little brochure for some folks...near the end there is a couple words about identifying sows. I hope the link works. drive.google.com/file/d/0B-9Tg4UOdnsLenphQ3d2eUZtTm8/view?usp=sharing

I was told by a respected Bear Guide that the hair or leg line down the back of the rear legs was a telltale sign.
Males ...the hair lays down Females ... the hair stands up.
I've yet to try and prove the validity of this observation tho.

Do you have a way to know for certain one is 22 years old and the other is 17 or is it more of an educated guesstimate?

Here in NS of you turn in a sample tooth to DNR...they send them away for aging and will advise you on age.

interesting...never heard that one before...or noticed it...but I'll look next time. Do I know the guide? Often big boars just have an attitude and swagger sows and lesser bears don't.....I also think one true to me test is if they are close and I get a good look...sow's wrists ( just above foot) seem to narrow up noticeably at the joint.

In WA & Calif a "tooth envelope" is issued w/tag & a front tooth is required by the fish & game dept. My 1st bear turned out to be a 9 1/2 yr old sow...& she was still under 200#!
