Noticed this thread is gett’in a little long in the tooth so it needed an uplift...appropriate or not.
Yeah I got an “up coming event” but it isn’t bow hunt’in for bear (sorry). Leaving soon for a trip to attend the 3rd annual West Texas Junkyard shoot. Meeting up w/11 other like-minded enthusiasts in Dickens, Texas for 3 days of long range, friendly competition w/19th century rifles. Sharps, rolling blocks, highwalls, plus Winchester & Marlin leveraction rifles. Loaded up 150 rounds of 45-70 caliber, cast lead bullets for one of my rifles today. Still have a few days to load a similar amount of 30 WCF (30-30 Winchester) bullets as well.
I’m coming from Washington (Pacific Northwest) to meet w/Other like-minded shooters from Pennsylvania, Texas & everywhere in between. No bears in attendance but the “junkyard” is a hunt’in lease from a fellow Levergun Scoundrel named Billy Jack. We may see big Texas Whitetail deer, the ever present Texas wild pigs &, of course, the agressive Texas diamondback rattlesnake which I prefer to avoid. I will be staying in the town of Dickens, Texas which is the county seat of this West Texas area. I may have have failed Spanish in High school but know enough “Spanglish” to get by w/the local population.
Targets? Well we call ‘em “dingers”. Steel plates suspended by chains amongst the sagebrush at various distances. As I understand it, it will be a midrange shoot as the tgts range out to about 600+ yards. Wish me luck that my boolits fly true & the old Jeep Wrangler makes the trip eh? Some of the dingers that Billyjack hung are really old plowshares. But I’m sure they will produce the appropriate “ding” if we do our part. Food, drink, & outlandish stories will be provided at this Rendevous by all participants.
