Checked the camera this morning only 2 pictures of a bear, lots of sign going in and out but they just must not have came in. Will be moving the camera around different areas and directions had over 200 pictures and only about 6 of animals getting lots of false triggers. There are the 2 of the bear that was in. Seems like a little fella but good sign a bear in anyways. Will be adding the bait barrel next week i think to start and see how it goes.

Hey Mack11 ...that's good news ! Glad to see things are back on track... Nice time too ! I know a lot of guys don't go on stand until about 3pm to hunt, but on more than one occasion I've had my but perched by 11 am for a chance at one of these lunch time bears .
Shooter ? ... It's rather a subjective term. Guess it depends on what your goal is. Personally I'm more than happy with a 200 lb bear as they are prime table fare (in most cases). Estimating bear weights is probably the hardest part of bear hunting. I've seen short pudgy bears that I thought to be about 160 lbs tip the scales at 230 lbs and 180 lbs bears that I thought were in the 250 lb range. Keep in mind that bears are like people in the sense that they come in all shapes and sizes.
A few tidbits (or should I say Timbits) that Bea (Blackwidow) passed on to me were : 1 ... If the barrel is lying down ... and ya can't stuff it in the barrel it's a shooter, 2 ... If the barrel is standing ... and the bears back is as high as the barrel ...shoot ! 3 ... Sometimes you just know it's a big bear when you see it!
Now the short answer to your question ... Is it a Shooter ? From what can tell ... it looks to me to be a decent bear. Good girth and thick hind end, I'd have a hard time to pass it up. If I knew there was a bigger bear I might wait it out but if it were the only bear coming in I may be more inclined to bend a bow ! Sometimes you just don't know until it comes to the moment of truth ... waiting for the big guy can come back to bite ya in the butt. A bird in the hand ...
Keep em coming Lil Bruddah !

Thanks Tuk. Still super early even if I see this one first day I'm gonna wait it out a bit to see what else shows up. Putting out another barrel next weekend, was supposed to today but got called to work. Trying out some new bait mixtures and another stick bait up higher in the tree then last and some different stuff in it sure it's gonna be really bad. Will keep posting updates as I get more pictures.

Mack if you get a good opportunity early and it looks like a decent bear ... Hammer Down Brother !
Are you spraying any scent around in the trees when you rebait? Were you planning a separate site or just adding another barrel to the same site?
Personally I think you're better off with two barrels at the one site if you have bears coming in. Another site will just have you competing with yourself ... my experiences with two sites has always ended up they were where I wasn't ! ...On the other hand , if your sites are far enough apart you may attract in new/different bears. Down side is 2x the effort and expense. Never hurts to have a backup site if one goes dry tho.
As it stands right now I'm pushing it only baiting once a week with 3 barrels. I'll be starting a 4 day baiting routine now. I think the existing bears at my site have been programmed over the years so that when the berries are ripe the barrel patch will also be producing.

When I go in sometimes I take a spray bottle with vanilla mixed with oil shake it up and spray other times I don't bother. My plan was to add a second barrel to the same bait I'm at now. No need to have a couple baits if I'm getting bears at one. Did that with deer last year and the pictures when I was hunting the other stand made me sick. Thanks for the advice and I'll keep updating as times go on.

The problem with multiple baits (bear or deer) is that you'll always feel you're at the wrong one. This only occurs when you're just plane old hunting. But if you're trophy hunting and you finally get a big buck or bear visiting a site then you know 100% that you're on the right one! Then it doesn't matter what the other baits are doing - who cares? Good luck and get something that turns you on! That's what really matters!

So heres another new bear in seems to be a good size. Anyone have any input on what he might weigh. I finds bears extremely hard to judge being so new.

At first glance it appears to be a decent bear ... has a tall but lean look to it . It's really hard to judge due to the angle and without a reference point such as a standing barrel. Maybe put some type of marker on the tree and stump at the height of your barrel. Any other pictures mack11? Broadside?
Small bears and Big bears are usually easy to judge ... It's all the ones in between that become hard to size up. Trust me , we all have trouble at one point or another deciding whether it's a shooter , and more often than not we regret letting one pass that in hindsight we should have taken. By the same token we've taken bears that have contracted " Ground Shrinkage" syndrome !
Bears , like humans, come in all shapes and sizes and weights .. pudgy, tall, long, lean, rotund or any variation thereof, so there is no easy answer when it comes to judging bears. And it's a whole different ballgame when you are sitting in a stand or blind up close and personal as opposed to looking at Tcam pictures.
My best advice is to not be in a hurry to take the first bear that walks in until you've taken the time to methodically process all the things that differentiate big bears from small. A 200 lb bear is a nice bear . Don't get hung up on holding out for that monster, like I have, and end up eating tag soup!

Thanks for the advice Tuk. On my phone now when I get home from work will go through the pictures and see if there are better ones. Will be heading out tonight after work to drop off more bait and will add a marker on the tree at the top of the barrel for height. Awesome idea simple but never thought of that.

Was just out to check the camera and re bait. This is one of several pictures of the bear. Added some more to photobucket but not all. A lot of this bear in from 530pm on and coming back in at 8am. Check them out and let me know what you think. If this bear walks in on me he is going down.

Another picture of the big guy. Was going to hunt tuesday as well but had to work afternoon shift. Just missed him. Will have to wait it out for this bear to come in. Got the stand completely finished, rebaited and got set up tonight for tomorrow evening. Heres to hoping.
