If you hunt bear & have started a personal library you need the classic book titled Education of a Bear Hunter written in 1975 by Ralph Flowers & published by Winchester Press. It is out of print but can be found sometimes at Amazon. Also Google Everybody's Market in Elma, WA. Elma was part of Ralph's stomping grounds &; they have new paperback copies. Ralph is gone now but is a legend in the Pacific Northwest.
From 1948 to the 70s he first hunted Black Bear as an employee of the Washington Timber Protective Association & later as a sports Hunter after Ursus Americana was reclassified from a pest w/no protection to a game animal. Ralph had over 3000 kills in his lifetime. This sounds cruel as these professional Hunter's got paid each month by turning in their bag of bear tails....including Cubs. You learn in this book why & how Blackies peel conifers. On tree farms a hungry Spring Blackie can kill up to forty 20-40 year old firs in a day. Out here in logg'in country we still drive the logging roads (if the timber co gives a key) till we find a freshly peeled tree, jump out of the rig & the hunt is on! If you're not from the Pacific Northwest, this book will definitely round out part of your bear hunting knowledge.
Still, stand, snares & ferocious hound hunting in this illustrated book. Read where Ralph tracks a wounded toad of a bear under an old growth root-wad where, starting in the dark, he is locked in hand to hand combat w/a really pissed off bear where he only has his fists as weapons. His 270 Remington, once new, aged w/him...finally as he aged he had a scope put on it. Oh yeah, also Google book stores in the logging towns of Chehlias & Centrailia, WA. Enough said.
