This is an FYI if you're making round access holes in your barrels. DON'T!
It's just a matter of time before the hole size and head size match and you've got a bear caught by the head.
I have seen this twice. Once, up by Perry Sound, While checking baits we had one hung up. The bear was shot since it was big, totally out of control, and was tossing the barrel around pretty good. Release was not an option. Another time by North Bay my good friend lost a barrel and thought someone stole it. He looked all over. That fall the deer hunters found the dead bear in a swamp with his head stuck in the barrel. I'm sure it happens more then we know.
I would really like to see the MNR here in Ontario actually make it illegal to use a round hole in a barrel. I'm not a fan of regulations .. but .. this is one I could live with!
When a bear is hung up in a barrel it does not make us bear hunters look very good to the non hunting public! There is an anti-baiting crowd out there and we surely don't need something like this.
A rectangular or square hole will always allow the bear to cant his head and get out.
If you have a choice choose rectangular. It allows the most clearance.

I use oblong, with edges peened over. the smaller bears can not get to it and it is just big enough for a shooter to get his arm in.

Wow! I wish I could completely & simply convey the understanding & appreciation I am developing as a result of what some of you have brought to this forum regarding hunting bear over bait! I am trying to choose my words carefully to avoid being misunderstood as I state that my knowledge, understanding, & opinion of baiting has changed. I have said several times that I was never strongly against baiting but I was definitely uninformed & didn't have a full appreciation of the subject (not that I know it all now).
I was exposed to bear hunting in 1966 but it wasn't until the last decade that Ursus Americanus has become my # 1 hunting destination. I have taken a few bear by: hound hunting, spot & stalk, chance encounters during opening of deer season, & my favorite...still hunt'in. I've always taken my bear from on the ground & never in a state or provence that allowed bear baiting. That allows for a narrow opinion of baiting, even to the point of thinking it didn't pose much of a challenge & a greater sense of accomplishment that "my" methods provided.
Like anything else in life, an opinion formed w/o a fair comparison is a poor one. I had no idea of the physical & mental effort & planning it took! The strategy of bait placement & hanging a stand. I also struggled w/ethical questions but now realise that over bait the hunter is afforded a better chance to evaluate his/her potential prey plus probably a superior opportunity to be patient enough to take a good shot (we all know the values of that).
I have probably rendered an incomplete coverage of the subject but this is what was on my mind. As I said before, the change in my thinking was from your input on this forum plus the former, great forum Bears East Adventures (BEA). I can't help but wonder how much more there is to be learned by the currently silent majority of this readership. Bruce

When your hole's too big !
good video! It's amazing how those Velcro paws can empty out a barrel so fast. When your home in your garage and you make a 4" hole you look at it and say TOO SMALL - LIMITED ACCESS - and then you see those bears in action. It's funny BUT when you had to get that bait, lug it in, then get 500 pics of ravens, vultures, rodents, coons, sows and cubs etc. etc. - then you need to refill - it's not to funny then! What if you run 5 or more bait sites. YIKES!I have finally come to my own conclusion that any hole - big enough for a bear (this includes cubs) - to insert a head or a paw is - TOO BIG!
