The Life and Legend of Big Bill Hulet, written by his brother Russ Hulet in 2003, published by iUniverse, Inc.; 104 pages, paperback. This small book would be of interest to the bear Hunter & particular to those interested in all the aspects of hunting the black bear w/hounds. Hound hunting w/all its excitement & ferocity is here. Also an indepth knowledge of the habits of the Black Bear learned 1st hand.
This true to life story is of a man & his brothers who lived in Grays Harbor County on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington during the heyday of rough & tumble old growth logging during the first half of the 20th century. Logging, mining, but mostly bear hunting.
Killed his first bear at age 12, quit school at age 15 because it interfered w/his hunting & had taken over 3000 bears by his retirement at age 63. Ralph Flower's mentor, he hunted over 50 years, ten of them as a professional hunter.
"It was commonly believed that he could out run, out work, out fight, out drink, out cuss, and out hunt any man around. 'I was born under a stump, suckled on sow bear milk, and raised in jail' ". The picture on the cover shows a stocky man, cigar in mouth, carrying a bear on his back, w/a well-worn 348 Winchester in his left hand.
