Skeeter, April 15th. We cannot put bait or container out until opening day. Hiking every other day now. So? what's your plan this time around? No bear hunter worth their salt spends the off season without thinking about the successes or failures from the previous season. There is always a New "plan"
What's yours?
Ours is expand on our huge successes from last year. The barrel heights and hoist system worked friggin fantastic! re-baiting was the easiest we've had in years! No changes! The tree wrap worked and eliminated just about everything. We still had one or two bears of a particular size that could just barely beat the system. So this year after hundreds of videos we're adding about 16"of wrap to the bottoms of the wraps we currently have up.
Our varmints were down about 90% from previous years. We did encounter one raven that would hover like a hummingbird ( an awkward, clumsy hummingbird) and would still get some bait. And at one site we had a small bird about the size of a small robin that would fly into the opening. Overall the loss was minimal but it gives me something to overcome! These birds were tripping the camera with their constant visits and that is annoying to me. I'm installing a swing door! For years I have thought about a swing type door so this is also on the plan for this year. The swing door has been designed and is installed on the same hole pattern as the auto-feeders. Both the swing door and the auto-feeder can be swapped out in minutes. Due to my elevated barrel design the swing door will have a roller lower edge to ensure we don't have a wedging - bear paw catching condition. Last thing I need is to have a bear hanging off the ground caught by paw wedged between the door and the barrel. Remember my hole is 70" off the ground.
And lastly of course is the installment of the autofeeder.
The plan is to wait until we get a monster on the site feeding then swap in the autofeeder.
After all this comes the hardest part - killing him!

Wow! 193 guests last 24 hrs. Set a record. Just know some of you must have a question or a story to share. This old bear hunter is out to pasture but the draw of the Pacific Northwest Woods still has a hold on me.
Maybe a story or comment might pull my old Podner Tuk out of hibernation eh?
