Although this is just a fictitious rendition of the first night in camp , its one that many of us have shared and look back at fondly as the years pass by. Some of you out there are lucky enough to share this every year.
Hope you enjoy.
Twas the First Night in Deer Camp
Twas the night before Dear season
The boys were in camp
With all of their gear
Things had gotten quite cramped
With duffels and coolers,
Weapons and cots
They each dropped their burden
And claimed it their spot
The fire was started
They all were aglow,
It didn’t take long
For the liquor to flow
Bruce was first
To answer the call
He stepped out on the deck
And let out a great bawl
He ran back in the cabin
His fly still on low,
He said “Oh My God Boys
It’s beginning to snow”
Like kids in a playground
They all ran outside,
They hooted and hollered
They said Hawk even cried
Ginned to the whiskers
Awaiting the morn,
They laid out their best camo
They soon would adorn
Longeye sat quietly
As he polished his lens
He just couldn’t wait
To take snaps of his friends
It was well after midnight
Before they retired,
As Ole Marcus put
One last log on the fire
Soon all that was heard
Were the cracks from the fire,
But that soon was replaced
By the “Snore and Fart” Choir
Sugar plums danced
As they dreamed of good luck,
Aloft in their tree stands
And a Pope and Young buck
In the wee hours of morning
Before it was light
A god awful noise
Awoke them in fright
In the kitchen stood Reggie
All dressed in Treebark,
He was practicing his rattlin’
Into a fine art
“Get up “ says he
“It soon will be dawn,
Get into your stands
‘Fore the deer are all gone
Last out the door
Pete he turns off the lamp
So ends the adventure
Of our first night in camp.
