Not to suggest folks come looking to me for advice haha but I have had about 6-7 bear hunters message me about maybe not bear hunting because of lack of bait. They can handle the heat. They can handle the horse flies. But without bait....a bear bait is worthless. The majority of these hunters just want a decent bear for the freezer. They have good bear areas ( where isnt now a days ) . A couple have said they might not even bother because buying pricey bait just is counter productive to having bear meat in the freezer. I think the solution is to not bait for 8 weeks prior to the opener. A bunch of times we bait early - draw in a core group of bruins and feed them all summer. We pass a few in the early days of the season and then when we want to hunt deer or other game , we take one we have passed several times already. So, taking that into consideration...if you are primarily a meat hunter ( and who doesnt love bear meat) with no good bait source this year, at least an affordable one, I would suggest not even starting a bait ( with pricey purchased bait) until a week before the season. Fill it with dog food or something from a feed store and add a copious amount of stink. Within a week you should have a hit. Again, if I was a meat hunter on a limited budget with no access to large cheap supply of bait .... I'd opt to check my cam, and target the best legal bear I have on cam within that week and go in on the opener and take him. Easy peasy... under a couple weeks worth of work...maybe 3 trips into site and that ( with a smidgeon of luck) could/should provide a freezer of bear meat without breaking the bank. Bear hunting on a small budget is very doable. And I think the population in NS does need hunters tagging bears this fall. I'd hate to see hunters not participate because they think they need to run a bait for weeks/months ( guilty as charged personally lol) before the opener in order to get a great supply of meat and help manage the numbers. If bear populations were falling....I'd likely (secretly)have a part of me be glad hunter number or bear harvest was down ( cant help it) but thats not the case. So dont let the thought of scarce or pricey bait keep you out of your bear stand this fall. Do it on the cheap.....but do it. If hunters can't help control the bear population....the powers that be will find alternatives. None of them are appealing. Hunters taking them them and utilizing them to the fullest is the best solution. Hunters have for years been the leaders in conservation. I hope the bait scarcity does not change this.

2 or 3 bags of dog food with jello powder or a liter of chocolate syrup is all that is necessary.
I've always been about bait management. I currently still get donuts BUT the day will come when I'll need to buy.
Guys need to adjust accordingly. Spilled food at baits for birds and varmints can be the MAIN reason it's too costly to purchase bait. And in my way of thinking sows and cubs and yearlings are the worse and most costly varmints out there! Lots of info out there for guys willing to learn. Barrels that limit access need to be designed and employed. Barrels are available for less than the price of a bag of dog food. There really is no excuse. A little time and effort in the garage can go a long way to keep guys in the game If they're not willing to at least try to change then their hearts are not really in it. If all they want is an easy unchallenging hunt for cheap meat ... sorry i don't feel sorry for them.

You may have to do a little “dumpster diving” but bait is out there. The convenience stores I hit are more than willing to bag up donuts for me, but you have to respect them and show up when you say you will. I’m having as much fun now preparing and planning as hunting. OK, maybe not AS much, but close. Bait is out there, you just have to look for it.

I have to admit I am one of those hunters. It seems every year bait sources appear to be drying up. Late frosts this spring have decimated some of the apple crops ...never thought Id see the day apples would be a threatened bait source. Feed has always been a "Go To" bait in times of need. Where I work at a hospital I've resorted to getting any of the unused portions of meals ...( not plate scrapings but any of the unserved portions still in the food cart). Anything from turkey dinner fixin's to meatloaf and potatoes, assorted mixed veggies to Pizza and sandwiches. But even that is scant only getting a little better than a gallon pail full per day. But I look at that as a treat. I'm thinking this could be like the Skeeter treat bag thing.
Here it is the end of August and I'm still uncertain if I'll hunt. Hunting alone has lost its appeal and it seems the stressing about bait has taken a lot of the fun out of it for me. Skeeter and Losthunter both make compelling cases to continue . Time is certainly not an issue, I have 3 weeks in September and the 1st week of October booked off to "Get er Done"
Maybe a little trip to the bear woods to seek some soulful guidance may be in order this weekend. Well ...off to work I have bait pails to gather.
