TREESTAND PLACEMENT
As we had just discussed once you have found your chosen location the work begins for your barrel setup. This is one of the few times we put the cart before the horse. Once you’ve found the general area we now begin looking for our treestand placement. You’d be surprised how hard it can sometimes be to find that perfect tree in a forest full of trees!
We’ve found from past experience that stand placement is subject to change and try to look for several alternative options. The main reason being, that we will start baiting well in advance of placing the stand. As the bears frequent the site their trails in and out become quite well defined thereby determining our options to avoid their detection when they visiting the site.
Other things to consider are:
1 … Size of tree… is it of adequate size? How will the wind affect it – does it have a tendency to sway a lot. Does it provide some shelter from the rain?
2 … Concealment … does my, and surrounding trees break up my silhouette? What is the background behind me? Do I stand out with an open sky behind me?
3 … Is the evening sun at my back? A bear looking up into the sun will make you harder to see.
4 … Although my primary target area will be at the barrel or bait source, do I have alternative clear shooting lanes to the bear trails in case a one wants to hold up and just not come in until after dark.
Keep in mind the barrel location can always be moved or adjusted to accommodate your Prime stand location.
