Thanks so much bea !
I guess I should first introduce myself. As a religious follower of the church of "Bears East Adventures" I was so disappointed when it's creator decided it had sailed its course and felt it time to move on. So much so that I felt compelled to try and regain a rapport with any one out there who is as addicted to bear hunting as I am ... and I know you're out there.
I started hunting black bear with Bow back in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia in the late 1980's. I had hunted several years and had then taken a Hiatus for several years. When I moved to the South Shore ... Lunenburg ... I rekindled my fire for bow hunting Ursus. In 2013 I had switched from Compound to the traditional Longbow and in 2014 took my first traditional harvest.
I hope you'll join me and share your knowledge, experiences, trials and tribulations in our quest for that "Ghost of the Forest" ... Ursus Americanus!

Hi Guys...well I'm actually new to bowhunting I was 58 yrs old when my oldest boy gave me his hand me down pse Beast for xmas. I've been hunting rifle since I was 8 hunting rabbits with 22 back in NS. Since that time I hunted with my 270 that I received as an xmas present when I was 12. been doin that ever since.....BUT the first moment I picked up the BEAST I was hooked....since then I've only taken a 12 G shotty Maverick 88 18" barrel with me hunting elk in east Koots here in BC. I can't put the bow down. this past season has actually been my first full bow hunting season. I had 3 encounters with deer...1 whitetalil with a full house on each side and then 2 black tails here on Vancouver Island. Didn't harvest any but I loved every minute....I have a cousin who is really into blacky's and his enthusiasim is rubbing off...that and the fact that we have a spring bear hunt here which is pretty much the only thing we can hunt til end of Aug...soooooo bears it is. I had one encounter last spring. We can only spot and stalk or lay in ambush here in BC...NO BAITING....I got with 60 yds and my first blacky stepped off into the bush never to be seen again that day.... I am looking forward to this spring. I have another son who is also on the island and into bow hunting now too and we will be doing this together. thanks for the forum and I look forward to reading lots of stories and hopefully I can contribute something more than track soup recipes...cheers Edge

Well, well, well ...another Bluenoser in the flock. Just something about walking in the woods with a bow Edge ... whole different feeling. I'm not surprised at all that you're hooked.Spot and stalk for bear is a real adrenaline rush. If you haven't eaten bear before you're in for a big surprise, incredible table fare.
I'm anxious to hear tales of your Spring bear hunt this year, not to mention pictures of your first bear harvest.

Hi, my name is Darren and I'm a bear hunter. There I said it! Lucky for me there is no cure for my addiction. I met Tuk through Bea's former site and had the honor of Tuk writing the forward to my book about some of my bear hunts. I can't wait to see this site grow and plan on being an active member here. Welcome to all. Good hunting, Darren

Hey Abner...some mighty nice bears. I too met up w/Tuk on BEA. Didn't start hunt'in bears until 55+ but gray hair won't stop me. First bear was in Gasquet, Calif up near the Oregon border. Chase 'em now in Western (wet side) of WA about 50 south of the BC border. Learned so much from BEA & expect to share things here w/both old & new friends. Yeah, once I got the bug it kinda overshadows deer hunt'in. Hey Tuk, I don't use traditional archery but I do use 19th cent firearms, open sights, & lead bullets. It can be a little challenging too.

Lol! "Hi my name is Darren and I'm a Bear Hunter" Their ain't no pill for that Brother ! However ... I like to consider bqo as my own little Ursus Anonymous for those of us who feel the need to share, teach and learn from our triumphs and tribulations in our quest for that black ghost of the forest.
Hey Sideswipe ... I would have to say it is extremely difficult! Nothing wrong with your choice of weapon. I don't think I'd be speaking out of turn to say that more wild game has been shot with 32 or 3030 lever action with iron sites than any other caliber, and I suspect the the 45-70 isn't far behind !Lever action is my go to firearm.

Howdy.
My fellow Scoundrel Sideswipe was kind enough to extend an invitation to join you gentlemen in this new endeavor. I'm a Michigan native who has been infatuated by the American Black Bear for more than 35 years, and when I can't pursue them myself or introduce others to the hunt, like nothing better then to sit around a campfire with a good cigar and a half-way decent beer and talk about bruins with like-minded folks.
I suppose like many of you, I began pursuit of black bears for the thrill of hunting something "dangerous", but it wasn't long before I became captivated with these unique and fascinating creatures and the desire to learn as much as I could about them truly became an obsession. I've harvested enough bears where I have to remove a boot to count 'em, and although I still love to sit on a bait...any time spent in the presence of bears are good times indeed...I've become rather selective and get as much enjoyment from simply watching them as I do from harvesting another. Just as much time now is spent helping others realize their dreams.
All of my efforts pursuing and studying bears have occurred in the central and western end of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, an area that holds my spirit as much as the bears themselves. Nothing makes me happier than spending a mid-September afternoon on a bear bait in that glorious country, the woods ablaze with fall color, a slight whiff of honey, pork fat, and beaver castor carried by the breezes, all the while listening to the sounds surrounding you...
The hollow whoosh of a raven's wings followed by his adenoidal cronk as he circles the bait. The not-so-distant, mechanized chatter of a red squirrel, alarmed by the presence of a large predator. The absolute silence of the approaching shadows, just before his arrival. The trip hammer thump of your own heart, loud enough you fear he may hear...even though you've done this so many times before. The unmistakable death moan, clearly audible despite the mild ringing in your ears.
Ok. ok!...maybe that's laying it on a little too thick. Anyhow, permission to enter the camp?
