Well here we are already ... New Year - New Decade ! Spring Bear season just around the corner
First week of January and still awaiting our first major snowfall of the year here in "The Burg". Received a call from a Buddy about an hour away asking if I'd be interested in a bulk order from "Sweet Bear Bait Supplies". He's trying to round up enough guys to go in on a bulk buy and split the shipping.
I took a look at the products available but there wasn't a lot that appealed to me knowing the volume I'd need .I'm thinking it would be more of just something different to add to the mix. 2000 lbs of chocolate rainbow balls ... one hot day and you have a 1 ton licking block ! I have serious doubt that the ole bait buggy and boar hauler is up to the challenge.
Any thoughts ? Anyone ? Denis ?

Old Army buddy of mine from the early 60's wrote on his Christmas card in response to our Christmas letter that he had turned 80 a few months ago. He advised me not to go there this June. Outside of the obvious way of avoiding the birthday don't think I have much choice.
Funny you should mention bear season just around the corner. Well, I do have a related bucket list item: Take a bear this year still hunting w/one of those under-powered, short range, inaccurate lever guns like the ones us geezers like to shoot & load for. If I could arrange a "road kill" on a skid road somewhere off the mainline that I could sit over....that would be fine too.
Happy New Year & good luck to all!

Sweet Bear Bait Supply is about 1/2 hr from me. He does have a lot of stuff. Lots of jams/icing sugars etc Why do you think you need all that STUFF to get a bear and keep it happy? Bears just want calories. Shipping out there would be the biggest hurdle to overcome. Surely there's a calorie source closer to home. I said this a hundred times. there isn't a magical bear bait. JUST FEED THEM! Guys watch too many YouTube videos where everyone is an overnight expert. Some of the slop they mix on site is unbelievable. Bear baiting is turning into a game of excess.
Skull maybe you could add to this. I know what you use.

On another note. I'm currently in negotiations with a major scent distributor to market one of my bear ideas. They're excited to bring this to market. This will change the way a LOT of hunters currently bear hunt. They promise to have it ready for testing this spring. YES I am excited myself!
And I'm almost ready to market my own baiting system. The results from yrs of prototypes and failures ... I can honestly say it's close to being bulletproof. Anyway Ive been kind of quiet over the last yr ... for GOOD reason. Heck if someone can sell propane tank lickers for $170 or bear barrels for $150 each ... WTF! Im sittin on a gold mine.

I have used pretty much everything out there . During the last 5 seasons, I have only been using Popcorn with icing sugar. It works great for me,volume with no weight. An really ceap 50 lbs Cornel bag for 30$ I make 4 full 45 gallon barrels. I use Northernwoods Bear products Gold rush attractant. I mix 2 ounce per 5 gallon in to used french fry oil One 8 ounce container For $27 will give me 40 gallon of sent I’m dipping a burlap bag into the oil, and letting that hang on some tree branches That’s pretty much the way I Bait

Im in Cuba right now until the 24th. Nice weather - way better then the freezing rain currently in Ontario. I brought down 12 hunting magazines. will read one a day. My mind is racing and going through my bear ideas. Heck I was laying in bed this morning daydreaming. Mama asked if I was thinking of her. I said NO .. THINKING OF BEARS! That was the wrong answer I guess! 🤤🤤🐻🐻

Well, this year has turned out different than I thought it would. Now that some restrictions have been lifted, the wife a i and starting to travel a little and plan some trips. It’s going to be slim on the hunting trips this year, but that’s OK. Working on solid long term plans. Got a great elk hunting plan in place, been researching different spots for bear hunting. Just got back from Wisconsin Dells with a side trip into Minnesota. Who know that there’s good bear hunting in the no quota zone north of Minneapolis! Started looking at Virginia also. Looks like a sleeper area for bears. This year may not hold a lot of hunting trip for me, but may turn out to be my most productive year. Proper planning prevents piss poor performance. At least I’ll be around home for deer season in November.

Sounds pretty interesting to me ibowhunter. Never been in those areas you mentioned. A former neighbor & hunting buddy moved back to the Minn/Wisconsin area after his wife died. He has sent me some pics of some big whitetail. I’ve also heard that area does produce some big bear. Keep us in touch, always get excited about new territory.

Seems that a good portion of the forum Spring Bear “bear down” reports seem to be coming from the east side of the state & a surprising amount of them (for the few reports logged) are color phase. Most of you probably know the eastern side of washington is pretty much open country w/some mountains in both the NE & Se corners of the state. As recent as the last part of June a lot of activity has been in these highrt elevations.
The 21 June bear(good-sized color phase boar) was taken in the SE corner which, I believe, is called the blue mtns. Also a place popular in elk season w/the locals. What sounds like a traditional, spot & stalk hunt.. Not a hunt for the old or faint-hearted. Park the rig &hike in a good distance to set up camp. Following days the hunts radiated out of base camp. Steep terrain in places w/a lot of time glassing. One day at least 5 bear spotted no shooters or too far or too far down for a sensible shot for a solo hunter.
Finally spotted a shooter at 400+ yds. Hunter had to decide as it was a far piece down in steep, rocky terrain. Bear finally presented a good sight picture & was taken w/300 Win Mag-1 shot. Kinda reads like the typical TV hunting program eh? The solo hunter admitted it was a daunting task just to get to the downed bear. Sometime (probably upon 1st trip to base camp?) made phone contact w/some more manpower. Whether it took til the next day to complete the total recovery I’m not sure. I got exhausted just reading the account!
