I'm Back ! Round One ... July 25 ... Loaded and ready to go.
What a great little bait Buggy!
Decided to go with a half-assed approach with the raised barrel. The idea was to keep the small bears and varmints outta the bait. As it turned out , the bears just pulled everything out on the ground and picked thru it. Mind you not a crumb was left.

It's a Hit - The day after setup! From what I can tell by the daytime and nighttime photos , it looks like 3 bears - but no shooters.

Going into the 3rd Week I decided to go back to the old shaker and trough set up. The one barrel was too easily emptied and once gone there was nothing else for them to snack on. The barrel contained bakery items from local grocery store... breads, cookies, pies, donuts, cupcakes n muffins, bagels ...the works. Unfortunately it is limited... to a box a day if I'm lucky. A four box day is a lottery win.
The shaker hole is about 6 1/2" x 3 1/2 ". Big enough to get a nose or paw in but not an arm to pull things out. It is tethered to a tree with 8' of chain and two swivels.
The trough is just that - a feeding trough and contains a mix of 2 -1 Oats to BOC with fryer oil mixed in along with some Crosby's table molasses and topped off with pancake syrup. on the other side of the barrel is some Ole Roy dog food coated with icing sugar. I haven't had much luck with grains but have yet to try oats with the fryer oil.Bears "Eye View" from one of the trails that comes down over the hill. Let's see how this set up does. tuk d 1

So there has been a transpire since my last post so please bear with me , and I'll try and get you up to date. Firstly I ended up going back to a ground barrel. I just got tired of having to reposition my barrel every time I'd baited. Funny thing was - last year they couldn't or didn't budge it ... this year it was like the barrel was on a May Pole ! Seemed i had the same few bears arriving day and night . No shooters to speak of.
First Week of September :
Looks like a few new bears have found me . Getting visits all hours around the clock. Looks like I may have a potential borderline shooter. And a chubby little fella with a distinctive dark nose.

Second Week of September: It's been exceptionally warm with high humidity this week. I'm surprised at all the day time activity during this heat !Season starts on the 14th and things are looking up. It appears we have some new diners this week. Momma and 1/2 Pint ... Little did I know that they would be my company for the few three weeks. Oh My ! Everybody likes a crowd ! And who might this chunky fellow be ? Here we go ! Days before the opening day and Tall Boy shows up! tuk d 1

Opening Week was a bit lackluster for me. It wouldn't until Wednesday that I first sat on stand . Momma and Half Pint were in as well as another 2 1/2 year old bear , definitely not a shooter. Seemed to be a lot of Buzz amongst the Ursus Alumni prior to opening - Apparently a banquet was held in my honour. I count 5 in attendance!
Even had a visit from the Three Little Pigs ... My first Triplets at that site. It was a year of abundance for future prospects. Besides Momma and Half Pint, I also a a sow with twins plus the triplets !
Nice to see this fella is hanging out - still some shooting light left.
