Washington bear hunters were bushwacked & before they knew what happened they lost their Spring bear season. This season has been in existence for less than 20 yrs. It has been called a special (drawing) for a limited number tags (the calculated # of tags WAS to get a 2022 harvest of 145 black bear .53% of the state’s population). Timber companies were the ones who appealed the WDFW originally due to timber loss from bears peeling (girdling/killing fir trees) (see older posts re: WA spring bear seasons). The WDFW was also seeking another management practice concerning the number of deer & elk calf being born & their predation by bear.
Yes politics make strange bedfellows (writer’s strong opinion). WA state governor, a non-hunter, appointed 2 new commission members of the 8 who meet, decide & determine the fish & game policies of the state. They hold open, advertised meetings to get input from the public (course it was the WA public that voted out baiting & hound hunting in WA many years ago). Oh, did I mention that the two newly appointed commission members were also non-hunters? If you see a pattern here maybe it could happen in your state or province, Oh it get’s “better”.
The HSUS (Humane Society United States) rallied their members & filled the group of “public” who were there render their opinion. As a result, the vote of the commission was 4 to 4 for having a 2022 Spring Bear season. The 2 new appointees plus two other members voted against the recommendation of their own QUALIFIED WDFW biologists whose data supported the purposes & need for the special season. Since it was a-tie, the season was cancelled.
Yes, we were sucker-punched. Tonight I was unable to find the original announcement, hence the 3 above paragraphs. Well, to say the least, the WA bear hunters weren’t going to take this sitting down. Just found this update tonight & be encouraged. We can still fight for our rights IF we stick together. I am attaching a link to show alreadywhat has happened since 25 Jan.
