In 2020 I was gifted a barrel of shelled hazel nuts. I added a small bucket full to my trough (open faced barrel) to go along with my fryer oil/molasses oat and icing sugar dusted dog food.
When in stand I'd watch as the chipmunks would make non-stop runs back and forth from the trough to their tunnel systems in the face of the hill behind my barrels. I didn't really think much of it , other than to say the little buggers were stealing my nuts. Several days later I came back to find the hillside all torn up. My first thought was " Who the hell was back here with a small backhoe and why the hell are they tearing up my hill?". It really took me aback! As I tried to rational the destruction it came to me . The bears had torn up the hill looking for those buried stashes of hazel nuts the chipmunks had squandered.
If anyone ever offers you hazel nuts grab them and guard them with your life - the bears will dig clear to Hell to get to them. I could literally curl up and lay in that left hole !

Better sharpen that Bowie knife up if you’re gonna ambush a bear from that hole!
