So 2021 bear opening was sandwiched between a fall moose guiding gig in NB and my own moose hunt here at home in NS. The baits had been out since early May. As a result multiple bears were at each bait. A couple real bruisers too. And a bunch of medium sized boars.
My first night in stand was my last with respect to hunting for myself anyways.
A combo of things had me more than itchy to release an arrow. The two away from home hunts and the particular site I decided to sit is on some pretty heavily travelled public land. As a result, the stand location was such that a wheeler couldn't access it and the distance from where one could park a vehicle was farther than most folks seem to wanna walk these days. It could put a solo hunter into some serious "lugging regret" tho after the sun sunk below the horizon.
So anyways, I hadn't been there 30 minutes when the first bruins showed. Both small. Siblings I would guess. Around 6 pm ( long before the good ones generally) I noticed a fair sized bruin picking his way down one of the smooth trails. He was bigger and the two younger ones scurried away. Not in a panicked state....but clearly size mattered.
The bigger bear came and left 3 times. I was undecided. The 2 hours of remaining light were appealing to me. As was the notion of wrapping up the bear season to get ready for the upcoming moose hunts as well as whitetail.
I took pictures. I took videos. I txted buds.
The boars non-chalent attitude told me neither one of the truly big boars were anywhere handy, which was backed up by hundreds of tc pics thru the spring and summer. After 30 minuites I lifted the bow off the hanger and drew a bead on the unsuspecting boar. The arrow flew true . The bruin died within 40 yards and offered up a few small death moans to let me know the deal was sealed.
I knew others would likely be sitting this stand so I elected to drag the bear out whole and dress it elsewhere. Without having my nose grow everytime I tell the story, I can say it was about a 200lb boar. Somwhow I got off track.....my initial point was to ask....have you any pics of bears you shot minutes later? If you do, share them here. Be nice to get a thread going...an actual active thread.
