I make no bones about it, I love bowhunting. I love hunting, but bowhunting has always been my first passion. That being said, I’m a tinkerer. Always looking for the perfect broadhead. One that flies with my points, cuts a massive hole and one that I can resharpen. I’m also a colorblind tightwad. Probably shot 50 broadheads into animals over the years. The only “fails” I’ve had were both mechanicals, so those are out. Magnus Buzzcuts are what I’ve been using for awhile. For some reason I keep coming back to them. Was talking with Pasquale aka Skull today about what he uses. Since we’re hunting together in a few weeks, I thought he input would be good. He’s made the move to QAD Exodus swept. Surprisingly, that’s the head I’ve been kicking around trying. Going to get a couple packs for me and a couple for him coming. Probably stick with the Magnus for this hunt, but looking forward to trying the Exodus. What broadheads have you gentlemen had the best results with? Give me something new to obsess over!

Im with you....Ive seen expandables work great...but Ive also witnessed first hand 3 epic fails with them. So I'd be hard pressed to use them. Mind you....for sure many critters are taken with them each year. But I can't unsee those failures. Ive used magnus stingers for many many years. No complaints whatsoever. Recently tho, I switched to useing single bevel broadheads. I'm very impressed. Again, I dont believe there are any "magic bullet" ( well magic bh ) broadheads. A well placed shot trumps a particular broadhead anyday.....but thats likely preaching to the choir here lol. For what its worth, and the fact its a rainy morning here, I'll offer my 2 cents on the single bev love affair I'm having haha. 1) I saw what it did on a 1700 lb cape buffalo. 2) The nature of the single bev permits it to keep rotating after it pokes thru the critters hide and continues into the flesh....thereby causing a slight L shaped wound channel. 3) If it hits heavy bone, or the animal has heavy thick bones, it will penitrate that bone. I think the twisting action caused by the single bev splits the bone. 4) Most animals Ive seen wounded are a result of either too far fwd or too far back. With the single bev.....that eliminates one of those two dreaded scenarios. I cant tell how many times Ive had a hunter text or tell me they hit too far fwd and got about 0 penetration. If ya really wanna part with a bit of coin....check out grizzly stik broadheads. They have some great reading on penetration on the website.

I've tried the mechanicals as well ... ended up giving them away. What I found was that if you don't get a pass thru then the blades have a tendency to just fold up and the arrow sides out. The problem with that is that I want those blade to continue slicing each time that arrow moves as he runs . I had used a Rage Mechanical with the crossbow - got a passthru on bear that sunk itself in a rotting log. I carefully cut away the wood from the mechanical with a knife and extracted the bolt only to find that the ferrule had been bent .That was the last time I used a mechanical.
There's a lot of good fixed blades out there now that will do the trick quite handily. Getting a good bleeder trail on a bear is difficult to start with, so as long as those edges are razor sharp and a double long short your tracking should be a short job. Bentlimb turned me onto the Magnus Stingers. They fly great on all my stringed instruments ... Longbow, Compound and Crossbow in the 125 grain category. I like the fact they are a cut on contact broadhead and not a chisel tip like the old NAP Thunderheads that were once very popular.

As for weapon of choice Ib61 , like you I have Hunted primarily with stringed weapons , although I must confess the last several years have been with the crossbow. In a way I feel like I've whored myself out not sticking to the Longbow and compound. I honestly haven't made much of an effort to continually practice to feel confident in my shooting skills as an archer - it's there but I need to awaken the desire. I feel like I'm cheating myself.
Funny thing is though , I mentioned to Bentlimb a week or so ago I'm thinking of selling my rifle . They haven't been used in years . ( Remington 270, 7.62 x 54 Russian (sporterized), 2 - 30-30 Marlin 336 and an old Lee Enfield 303.)
This is my reason for selling ... A Blacktail Sitka.... I just can't decide. Only issue is they have halted orders until further notice.
