I have a great respect for those who take their bears w/stick & string. I sometimes wish I had continued when I took a rabbit w/a recurve bow in 1954.
Later I went through the experience of high powered bolt actions w/telescopic sights. I thought I had arrived at the level of a Good marksman. I carried a M16-A1 for about 11 yrs in the military after my initial training w/the M1 Garand followed by the M14.
I guess it was when my age qualified me as a part of history that I gained an interest in the firearms of the late 19th century. I bear no ill will to those who enjoy other weapon systems for marksmanship competition or hunting but I have finally chosen the path that seems to fit me best. I now enjoy single shot breech loaders & leverguns. I have also picked up the habit of manufacturing (reloading) my own ammunition.
My last three Black Bears and a Whitetail deer were taken w/Leveraction rifles (45-70, 450 Marlin, & 35 Remington). Of course I have "degenerated" to iron sights & cast lead bullets.
I also hang out w/the "Hyphenated Gang" (see Calibers I listed) & our annual get together at the U-Pick Sagebrush Ranch where we shoot origional or replica firearms out to 1/2 mile at "dingers" or steel plate targets & listen for the rewarding, telltale "ding".
I wish all of you the best w/whatever the type of weapon you take afield. We all share the same passions. Together we prevail, divided we fall.

Well said Charleton ! I must confess... altho I don't have a lot of rifles (30-30,303,270 & 7.62x54 Russian), I have to my favorite is my trusty lever 30-30. I sometimes wish I would have maintained an interest in the long guns but if I did I'm pretty sure I would have followed down a similar path as you SideSwipe.I'don't know ...just something about carrying a lever in the woods, much the same as a bow for me .
Your annual get together sounds like a lot of fun ! No stories told there eh?
