So ? Can anyone enlighten me on the subject of calling bears ? At present Nova Scotia does not have a Spring Bear Hunt ...yet! I guess my question is .... Is bear calling primarily a Spring thing ? I certainly understand that calling during mating season would certainly prove to be beneficial... but what about the fall. I would think that Bears would be more on the hunt for food than mates.
Are there bear vocalizations that can be used in the fall to attract bears in ? I wasn't really thinking of distressed rabbit or fawn bawls.
Having said that ... it might be cool to go back into my bait sight in Spring and try to use bear vocalizations to get some mating season footage.

You can call anytime of the year, it doesn't have to be spring.

Sideswipe ... I can't tell you how many times I've chuckled over Buddy shakin' like a dog ... well ... you know the rest of the saying !
Actually it's a great video. I was amazed at how these bears come into the rabbit/fawn bawl call. Much the same as a coyote!
Mack 11 if you're reading this ... that sure might help the spot and stalk hunt you were considering .

I have talked to a couple hunters who have successfully called in bears during the last year. Didn't do any calling last Friday as there was no fresh sign. If I am going to cold call, I at least want proof bears are in the neighborhood. Both tHe above mentioned calling experiences produced a bear up close & personal in less than 5 minutes. I don't have a tree stand & in the ground game using a partner to watch your back is a good idea. Oh yeah...don't forget the call works on all predators (as a teenager calling in rabbits I ended up w/a bobcat & years later, while attempting to call in coyotes at night I almost wet my pants when I had a Great Horned Owl hovering about 3' above my head). Calling can be exciting.

Well I've been to the annual Happenz in eastern Washington where several Levergun Scoundrels congregate to shoot at "dingers" at ranges up to 990 yds w/19th cent rifles (or their replicas). 2d Sat in August is the last Cowboy Centerfire Sihoulette shoot for the year so its time to get into serious bear hunt'in mode(state of WA gnl season starts 1 Aug). Limit is 2 bear (one on Eastside & one on Wetside or both on the West). Average blackie taken is 200-250 although some in the "toad" category & a few color phase can be found. The latter limited to what I call the "serious" hunter.
This is the 2d year that I plunked down $ 200 for an annual permit that gives 400 individuals access to 98,000 acres of Werehauser timber land. As long as we are legal we can use the land for hunting, fishing, camping, limited firewood gathering, hiking...you get the picture. This is a "motorized" permit which is handy for us "nimrods" that are crowd'in 80. Don't laugh...hunting is a major part of my life since my 1st rabbit at age 9 & I'm not giving up yet! BTW gents, my 2d rabbit, at age 14, was w/a bow (wish I stayed w/it!).
I have 2 possible hunting partners: Carlos, young, a son of a Cuban refugee who won't sell me his pristine Winchester 32 Special, inexperienced but smart & a quick learner, & Ron, a Master Chief petty officer retired, who hunts both bow & gun (experienced deer but virgin bear hunter). Ron also has a Werehauser permit but Carlos does not.
I have called in crows, rabbits, & bobcat but not a bear. That is the direction I wish to take. Ron has shared where he has already found bear scat while scouting. I will be out scouting soon!
My intent is to hunt w/a partner & to use calling as my primary method. Wish me luck, I will post updates when I get my butt in gear.

Bears are definitely out & moving now. On the Eastside where there are more open areas, calling has taken a few this last week. One hunter stated that the bear was coming in at a run & dropped 10 yds from him. End of May to beginning of June does are dropping their fawns. Bears, especially the experienced ones definitely know & respond to a fawn bleat (or a fawn bleat call). It is great when a bear is spotted & the caller can play him like bringing in a fish. Cold calling is much more vague. Can’t call once or twice & sit for an hr expecting the bear to come thru. I have talked to hunters who have had to call constantly for half an hour or more.
Recalling a humorous story I read today. Father stated that his 16 year old son & two of his buddies decided to try bear calling. They ended up having two bears come running. One was popping his jaws & ready to fight for a meal. Guess the boys were pretty scared. Two of them emptied their rifles w/o hitting a bear. Fortunately the third member of the party did connect & drop a bear.
Just remember, you might think you’re call’in bears but any predator will respond. Sometimes the “first responders” aren’t predators but Ravens. I don’t know how they do it but hiding under a tree canopy they were right above me in minutes. Most predators, when they learn it is a man will turn & vacate the area...cougars don’t care, they just keep coming. Friend of mine was calling coyotes by moonlight. Had a creepy feel’in, turned & spotted a cougar sitting behind him less than 20 ft. He told me this tale as we ate cougar link sausage w/some liquid refreshment (delicious! Kinda like veal).
