Well August is almost upon us ...Time to start getting serious ! I've noticed in my neck of the woods a lot of fellas have already been baiting for a month now . For me ... not my cup of tea . tried it last year and found it sure makes for a long baiting season. Up at 4:30 am every morning for 3 months just to get the few sweets I can from the local donut shop wears thin after while. Not to mention the 200 km round trip run every three or four days for bread supplies.Mind you I had great success with bear numbers but I'm in a well established bait site, so it will be interesting to see how this year differ from last by starting the first week of August.
Looks like it's back to hunting solo this year. I'll miss the camaraderie and sharing in the hunt, but I'll have the freedom to go at my own pace and schedule. Only having to worry about 3 full barrels instead of 6 , I'll be able to double up on what few sweets I get as well.
Skeeter has been very generous and has allowed me access to the Skeeter files on his Big Bear Barrel setup. I have the hanging brackets made but I'm waiting on a barrel to add his baffle feed flow design. Still time yet though. even if I'm a bit late setting it up I can still try it out.
So it looks like I'll be setting up the first week of August, but I might just trailer in my barrels and bait cart tomorrow. As it stands I'll probably set up the same as the last two years. I'll decide when I get there whether I change things up a bit ..If it ain't broke ...Don't fix it right?
Good Luck to one and all this season ... now it's time to get some chatter going and pictures flowin'. Show and Tell time Boys and Girls ... let's have at "er !

LMAO Skeeter ! rolling
Looks like I'm going to patch up one of my existing barrels to use. Have a couple that the holes are way too big on anyways. Thinking I can turn the hole into an access hatch for the baffle.
Gotta figure something out quick! ... Apparently ..." I've Been Told " Hahahaha

Bear Log ... 31 07 16 ... 9:30 am
Well at least I have something in the woods to get started. I'm at the same site as last year. Only put a half barrel of bread and sweets in 2 of the three barrels, just to see what I had coming in. Tcams are up and ready to go ... now it's a game of wait and see.
Went to dump the Stink Bucket from last year ...Oh Lord ... Still pretty ripe !

Bear Log ... Mon 08 Aug 16 ...10:30 hrs ... I was relieved to find the barrels had been hit. I really hate to get cocky about my site ... I never take it for granted ! 39 hrs until my first hit ... I was ecstatic to see a shooter be the first to visit.
A few visitors !
OMG ...Stubbie made it thru the winter. He's a scrawny little bugger, but he beefed up thru last fall enough to get him thru ! Don't let his small stature fool ya ..I watched him push bigger bears off the bait ! Yes he has a name so that makes him a pet ! Let's just say he's my pet project !

Good pics...good bears! Looks like they were waiting for Old Tuk's annual feast. I hope someday to sit over bait when one of these ghosts come silently in. How do you control your excitement & keep still?

Our season is close here as well. I'm hoping to get a shot at one before they come down off the hills to the rivers for the spawning salmon....won't be worth shooting a fish bear once they start that....No baiting allowed here so I'm hoping to get out this weekend and set up my trail cam and see what's lurking about. Opening day is 2 weeks off. Deer starts the same day so I'm ready for either opportunity...good luck to all. Edge

Week #2 ... Thank God I have 2 Tcams at the site . One had either gotten bumped or was a bit loose and tilted setting the aim askew and only getting 36 photos. The Covert came thru tho and provided me with some good photos for the week ...386 frames.
Well it looks like 12 O'clock Charlie is living up to his name ... Day or night according to the Covert.
Nice to see Patch hanging around as well ... every time I see him I have to relive that moment !
The Tcam catches me leaving in disgust after a piss poor shot ... Nothing but butt fat on the arrow !

Bear Log .. 18 Aug 16 ...13:45 hrs
Well today was a rude awakening ... I last baited on Sat 13 Aug 16. and after checking the tcam photos from the 13th, I found that the bears had basically emptied 3 barrels by the 15th ...3 days.
This is where Skeeter pipes in about the SBV !!!
I have a couple , what I consider shooters, coming in and it's nice to see daytime activity considering the heat and how dry it's been.
Here's a few Photo picks from Week #3
Two more steps and it's a broadside shot at 8 yards !

nice lookin bear .. 3 barrels full. tuk there is a guy here in Ontario that uses 6 barrels. makes a 2x4 frame 3 barrels on each side in a "v" pattern - open side to hunter ... barrel holes face the inside of the v toward the hunter ... barrels can not be rolled or moved. BUT it takes 3 guys all day to do 3 spots! WOW! a lot of bait ... 18 barrels worth! WOW! WOW! he baits 5 weeks in advance and does not visit the bait sites until the night he sits. they do real good. I don't own a transport company so this method is out of my league. here's a link to an article about him and a few other guys ... some interesting info to digest. All of them are different. Reading between the lines what actually is the best method??? www.oodmag.com/hunting/better-bear-baiting/NOW I thought we talked last year when you had just about reached your limit - physically and mentally - gathering/feeding bears ?? still looks like a nice bear no matter how it's done! 8 yds ... cool! how hard do you have to hit him on the head with that tomato stick you use? HAH pot stiring

Nice article Skeeter ... looks like I'm doing a few things right ! I guess the answer to your question is really ... Whatever works for you ! Just because it's different , doesn't mean it's wrong. Lots of ways to feed a bear ! Interesting tactic about leaving his scent at the bait when not there to condition them to his scent .
Yeh I was little bummed out last fall. I've always enjoyed sharing in others success. After having a friend come in and miss twice on bears ...one of which I was getting ready to draw back on when he shot it from out from under me ... I just broke and pulled the barrels a few days later.
I've had time to regroup from last season and have resigned myself to the fact that if I want to hunt bears I'll pretty well have to rely on myself, so I'll just suck it up and enjoy the ride. I've taken a more relaxed approach to baiting this year which has helped a lot to relieve the stress of worrying about other peoples schedules.
Even get a chance to enjoy my surroundings Ahhhh ... The Bear Days of Summer
LMFAO ...Tomato Stick ! rolling rolling rolling

Bear Log .... Tues 23 Aug 16 ...13:45 hrs Bait site cleaned out again, last visitor was 10:48 this morning. I'm amazed how tidy these bears are ... not a crumb to be found. Tcams ... Covert 442 pics ...Moultrie ... 97 pics. Not sure why I'm getting so few pics from the Moultrie, they are set up the same. Almost like the sensor may be intermittent. I've relocated the Tcam and rechecked the photo setup. Looking to rebait Saturday so I'll see how it works out. Ideally both cameras should face north, unfortunately my best trees have the Covert facing West and now south for the Moultrie ... hopefully there won't be too much washout.
Still getting a few daytime pictures, along with a new Family. Momma's not far away, I have a night shot of her with one of the cubs.
Pics of the week ... times are good !
Good to see Stubby's starting to put on a bit of weight
