So still a bit away from the fall season here, left the barrel in the woods at the bait sight all winter and decided to set up a camera a couple weeks ago. Had a mason jar of bacon fat laying around so took it out and rubbed it all over the tree behind the barrel. Still wont be baiting for a bit as its so early but going to start end of may to see what kind of pictures I get. Checked the camera today and had my first 2 pictures of a bear. Anyone have any different plans this year, trying anything new.

Yes I use plastic barrels, also have some metal ones but just had that and its a lot lighter to carry into area. Will be adding an additional barrel to this set up this year and also 2 more metal ones at another location.
Wont be heavily baiting until about first of august, just putting enough out to keep them around and get some pictures. I bait them 5 minutes from my house and only about a minute walk into the woods so baiting early doesnt bother me to much..

OMG ! ... Baiters Dream
Don't let Skeeter see this one ... He'll be looking to buy property in Nova Scotia!
Some of our BQ guys and their Mega Pilgrimages just to bait ... Gotta love their tenacity. As much as I love bear hunting ... Don't know that I would do what they do.

yea I seen it. You can both bite me! 5 minutes to the first bait. Hell! our cottage is more then 5 minutes from the first bait. You guys are pussies! BUT .... the distance made me smarter (I think)? When something comes easy, I think people in general, stop thinking.
Yup! I'm going with that!
Just waiting for the weather to warm up and get the donut dryers out. Then I get to do it all over again.
Cuba was great! Just got back. Working on my lawn roller today so I can get out there and make my bear and moose hunting $.
All you spring bear hunters ---- get out there and good luck.

Was scouting a bit last weekend out by my camp, which is located on 3500 acres. A but to much to cover and hunt the entire thing without setting up several baits. This site is a bit further away 30-40 minute drive then a good clip in from the camp. Looking to try a different set up with some different baits at this site to see what happens. Was thinking maybe set up 2 baits, use 2 different types and see which is more active. Then switch it up and see if the action switches. Decided this year im not going to hunt deer and focus everything on bear. Have to go to school for my apprenticeship Sept 05- Oct 20 so will not be able to do much hunting during this time but will put in every bit of extra time into it.
Did some work to my bait site form last year on Sunday, cleared out some more area, cribbed in my barrel, as you can see in the picture the old deadfall behind it. I took a bunch of cut and limbed smaller spruce and deadfalls and cribbed in the barrel so they have to come in around the side and give me a better shot. Will be going out again tomorrow to do some more work. Will keep posted

What's to hunt in Cuba? Juices definitely flowing now. I seen some advertisement in a brochure for hunting - mostly bird hunting ... never looked any further. Just went fishing twice and of coarse all you can eat and drink! Yowza! Met four Quebec gals. 2 beauties were lesbians and the other two were old and available ...Yikes! not for me! stayed close to my sweetie. But those old French gals were persistent. good for the ego! Back on track - just about got all the parts/upgrades for my bear vendors for my May 6 journey to bear country. A few tweaks and we should be closer to bear perfection (I say that every year - like we all do!)

Parts upgrades, bear vendors wow! Sounds llike ypu're gett'in w/the program! Ever take your product to a sports/outdoor show? You don't know the half if it! I've been on a 15, maybe 20 year quest to solve all and any of my bear issues. I'm sure my issues are similar to what many other bear hunters endure all the time. I've built about 8 or 10 different designs of an automatic bear door. It weighs about 10 lbs and opens and closes when you program it to. One 5Ah battery and I've had it running for 78 days - then I stopped testing. It bolts in with 6 bolts. Yes bears can be trained to be there at specific times. But the learning curve here was you also get all the undesirables there on cue - especially those sows and cubs - they get there 1/2 hr before dinner time and stay till the door closes! nasty little SOB's. Having them there was truly counterproductive. They totally ruined an entire fall hunt. We had about 9 sows at 5 different baits with all their cubs. We never had a boar on any site. That year I went sow and cub hunting with a slingshot. I went through 2 big bags of glass marbles. I wacked a lot of bears. It was a hoot!
Then I designed an automatic bear call scent dispenser. It was programmable to emit scent out whenever you wanted it to. It will now run about 30 days spraying every 15 minutes. It has every other bear call method I've ever used BEAT hands down. It doesn't stop because bears or varmints tear it down. Rain, sun, heat, cold, - it sprays. The last 2 years it's the only thing we use right from initial bait deployment. No messy grease, no rotten meat, no dead beavers, etc etc. And when Mr big comes through midweek, or mid day , or when it's raining .. matters not! we get him on the bait. The strongest freshest scent all the time! I always wondered how or when my rotten meat was pilfered. I always wondered how long greased trees smelled for. I often wonder what the potency of all the anise etc etc was doing 3 days after I left or after a couple summer rains. Also add in the sickening procedure it was getting that stink bait gathered, ripened, stored at home, transported by truck then biked or carried it. By the end of the day - sooner or later there was a mishap. either truck was infit for taking mom to church or it was on my clothes. There had to be a better way!
I built more barrels or adapted more barrels then everyone on this blog - combined! I think I've worn out 2 mig welders!
My latest endeavor is, of course, my Bear Vendor. This is a method, or I'll call it a "presentation" to wean out all the bears I don't want at the bait site! Sows, cubs, yearlings, and all bears under 400lbs BE GONE BYE BYE ... go somewhere else. The Bear Vendor system finally proved itself last year with 5 shooter (monsters) at 5 bait sites. We had chances at 3 of them but we frigged up. I put an arrow through one and never got him (he was back on the bait 5 days later ? ?) My son passed on a beauty because he wanted the bigger one ?? He said there's no glory taking the smaller one WTF? he's nuts - that was a full mount any Cabela's would pay to have. Mark had his come in, only to mysterious spook and dash off. If you ever wanted to see a guy with his heart cut out - that was Mark.
So after reviewing hundreds of videos we have made a few minor tweaks and hopefully this is the end of it.
Now comes the exciting part. What happens when the auto door is installed on a bait with only one or 2 monsters on it. Can we swing that bear on to our schedule consistently rather then guessing what his next move will be!
Stay tuned ... May 6th I'm up in bear camp for a week. TWEAKING! I LOVE IT!

Fascinating! You have obviously put a lot of thought & sweat into this. Would like to see pics/videos but w/what you have invested you may need to protect your R & D at this point. Course I doubt the average hunter has the time, assets, or inclination to put that much energy into such a project. You obviously derive/thrive on this challenge.
On a MUCH smaller scale, I get a lot of off season enjoyment playing w/load development making 19th cent design rifles do things beyond their origionsl intent. Waiting on a hammer spring to arrive today to rework a 45-70 trigger assy. There's always another variable to "tweak" eh?

Waiting on a hammer spring to arrive today to rework a 45-70 trigger assy. There's always another variable to "tweak" eh? Yup a LOT of R&D. I know some of the stuff is marketable and I know guys would pay for it. Just go to any Gander Mountain or Cabela's or Basspro .... look at all the stuff.
But I'm the hardest customer and the biggest critic out there. I wouldn't sell anything unless it satisfied me first. Hence ... nothing out there yet. I'm going to prove the BEAR CALL sprayer out for one more season at 6 spots. My 5 and the other new spot north of North Bay. My partner Mark has a son that just bought (last year) 150 acres abutting a provincial park and lots of crown land. Mark and Scotty installed a Bear Vendor system about 3 weeks ago. Scotty lives right on the property so it will be nice to see his progress. The Bear Call is easily marketed and all in will be less then $30. Where the money is is in the scent used to refill. Bear baiters by their very nature will always use way more then needed and this is what keeps them coming back. Use this system once and you'll never, ever go back to stink baits, grease etc etc. or use this system in conjunction with your original regiment to fill in the gaps.
anyway ... exciting times ahead (I hope)
